Welcome Letter

A Personal Letter from Dr. Erica Statman

Hello and welcome to Maimonides Chiropractic!

People tell me they find this website in several ways. Most of the time they are referred by friends or family who have had a positive experience in our office. Some are simply looking for relief from an ache or pain. Others are seeking relief but are also looking to be supported in a variety of health goals. And a third type are looking for natural means to improve their health and that of their children. And still others simply stumble upon us through a web-search hoping to learn more. No matter how you got to us, welcome!

One thing you may notice about our website is that we say we are “Dedicated to the Well-Being of Children and Pregnant Women”. In fact, not only are we dedicated to this goal, we specialize in it. Many do not know that chiropractors can take continuing education beyond their doctorate degree to specialize in a particular area. There are many specialties including: nutrition, acupuncture, orthopedics, neurology, spinal trauma, radiology, and pediatrics to name a few. Not all chiropractors choose to specialize but instead opt to give routine family care.

Why did I choose to specialize in the care of pregnant women and children?
I began to give consideration to specializing when I realized that I wanted to be able to do more for my patients who had complex needs and were searching for safe, natural resources. I wanted to be more informed and get even better results.

I’m a mother too…

As not only a doctor but also a mother, I am concerned about the current state of health of these two populations. Despite major advances in healthcare technology, we are growing less and less healthy as a society. Did you know even in our area that the cesarean section rate is almost 50%? Has nature really forgotten how to give birth or is there something deeper going on in the health of women and children? We believe the latter. In my office I see children with complex conditions that even five years ago I rarely ever saw.

My training…
Taking my concern and passion for caring for families, I embarked upon a rigorous 3-year program co-sponsored by Palmer College of Chiropractic and the International Council on Chiropractic Pediatrics.

The first year of the program featured the study of normal and abnormal considerations and conditions encountered during the spectrum of a child’s growth from prenatal care through adolescence. We were guided to polish our knowledge and performance of examination, differential diagnosis, evaluation, adjusting procedures and correlative studies in patient management. In the second year, topics included neurology, personal injury, sports injury, orthopedics, biomechanics, radiology, nutrition, toxicology, psychology, cranial sacral technique, algorithms for common pediatric conditions and unusual case presentations. In the third year, topics included the study of technique such as Activator, continued studies in Craniosacral Therapy, and Sacro Occipital Technique. In addition to this, we explored orthopedics, functional nutrition, autoimmunity and developmental disorders (such as the spectrum disorders of autism and ADHD). We engaged in hands-on experiential learning coupled with independent study and research. Each year we had to prepare and sit for lengthy written and oral examinations. The purpose of these exams was to prepare us to sit for the challenging board examination thereby earning the status of a Diplomate in Clinical Chiropractic Pediatrics (D.I.C.C.P.).

In September 2008 I completed this coursework and was proud to walk the stage at the 2008 International Chiropractors Association Annual Conference on Chiropractic & Pediatrics held in Freeport Bahamas.

Staying to my commitment to the patient.
